The well-manicured estate, with over 40 mature trees, has an romantic history as the home of famous three-term U.S. Senator James A. Reed (“Fightin’ Jim Reed) and famous woman entrepreneur Nell Donnelly-Reed (better known as “Nelly Don”). Before becoming the famous 3-term U.S. Senator, James A. Reed was the mayor of Kansas City at the turn of the 19th century. The estate is steeped in 1920-1940 "Pendergast" era political history and was host to many notable Kansas City political and business leaders. Nell Donnelly built an apparel manufacturing empire from a small dress making business. The “Nelly Don” line of women’s apparel was the largest apparel manufacturing firm in the world during the 1930s and 40s. The famous story of Nell Donnelly’s kidnapping and James A. Reed’s efforts to free Nell Donnelly from kidnappers and then prosecute them before the couple’s subsequent marriage is detailed at http://www.nellydon.com/story.html.
